NZEI Te Riu Roa is committed to the protection and upholding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We believe in the power of unity and the importance of working together to ensure that the rights and interests of our members, and all Māori, are respected and advanced.
Our own aspirations to being an organisation based in Te Tiriti premised on Te Tongi – “Kotahi te kōhao o te ngira e kuhuna ai, te miro mā, te miro pango, te miro whero” and implementing our Te Tiriti partnership through the framework of Mōku te Ao.
Our commitment to decolonising our structures and processes and supporting kaiako and kaimahi Māori in the re-indigenisation of education for mokopuna Māori.
The Government has voted Treaty Principles Bill past the first reading. It is designed to erode te Tiriti o Waitangi by undermining the way it is applied in law. NZEI Te Riu Roa opposes this bill and joins the mobilisation of tāngata whenua (Māori), tāngata Tiriti (non-Māori), and many groups and organisations in saying “Toitū te Tiriti” (Honour te Tiriti)!
What is good for Māori is good for everyone.
As education professionals you give life to Te Tiriti in education. You can now make a submission against the Treaty Principles Bill.
Submissions are open until January 7.

Our Toitū te Tiriti activity is designed for you to show and share how you give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in your mahi.
How to use this resource:
• Download the Toitū te Tiriti resource:
-English version for schools
-English version for ECE centres
-Te Reo version for kura
-Te Reo version for kōhungahunga
• Print out (in A3) the resource.
• Choose one way you give effect to Te Tiriti in your mahi and write that under ‘Giving effect to Te Tiriti in my school looks like …’
Note: It’s best to use a thick pen such as a vivid so it is clear to see.
Fill out the resource, scan/snap a pic or, record a video sharing your Toitū te Tiriti message.
So that your message can be read loud and clear, you can also take a close up of the poster to really get your message across.

In a school or kura we are the people that do essential work alongside teachers and principals. We support ākonga in the classroom, manage school offices and administration, libraries and science labs and much more – our work is made up of many threads. Together we are building power to win improvements to our collective agreement – with fair pay, job security and the professional learning and development we need – the essentials!
The pay equity claim for teachers is currently underway. It is about addressing the historic and current undervaluation in both pay and status in roles that society has perceived to be ‘women’s work’. The process determines if there has been undervaluation and if so, this is corrected. All teachers and principals working in schools, kindergartens and education and care settings are covered by the claim, regardless of gender.
Early childhood teachers so an incredibly important job. But their pay is up to 52% behind kindergarten and primary with the same skills, qualifications and responsibilities. We believe the government needs to act now to fix the gap.
Tamariki in Aotearoa are missing out because learning support is massively underfunded. Together, we can push the government to increase funding so a child can feel connected, supported and valued at school or in their early childhood education.
Initial Teacher Education (ITE) plays a vital role in our education system, preparing future teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to begin teaching.
The Pūaotanga report was an independent review of staffing in primary schools which paints a dire picture of our schools.
